Dr Pratyush Ranjan is a cataract, refractive and glaucoma surgeon based in Varanasi, the city where Sushruta performed the first documented cataract surgery over two and a half millennia ago. He serves as Medical Director of ASG Superspeciality Eye Hospital, Varanasi and as Regional Chief Operating Officer of ASG Eye Hospitals for the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand zone.
With more than 55,000 cataract surgeries performed, Dr Ranjan is among the most experienced cataract surgeons of his generation in India. His practice spans the full spectrum of anterior segment care: phacoemulsification and manual small incision cataract surgery, premium intraocular lenses (multifocal, EDOF, toric), refractive procedures including LASIK and ICL, and medical and surgical management of glaucoma, including combined cataract and glaucoma surgery.
Training and Qualifications
Dr Ranjan holds MBBS, DO, MS, DNB and MAMS qualifications. He completed his postgraduate training in Ophthalmology at Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, and trained further at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne (United Kingdom), the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and Sitapur Eye Hospital, Uttar Pradesh.
Beyond his clinical training, Dr Ranjan is pursuing the Advanced Management Programme in Healthcare (AMPH) at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, bringing formal expertise in healthcare operations, strategy and leadership to his role at the helm of ASG's UP and Uttarakhand operations.
Before joining ASG, he served as Consultant Ophthalmologist and Medical Superintendent at NSPB's Shaheed Bhagat Singh Eye Hospital, where under his leadership the hospital became the highest volume cataract surgery centre in western Uttar Pradesh.

Dr Ranjan has authored more than 37 publications in peer-reviewed national and international journals, one book (Visual Outcome after MSICS and Phacoemulsification Surgery, Lambert Academic Publishing, Germany) and four book chapters. Teaching and Mentorship
As programme director of the fellowship training at ASG Superspeciality Eye Hospital, Varanasi, Dr Ranjan has trained more than 40 fellows from India and abroad in cataract, refractive and glaucoma surgery. His fellows routinely progress to fully independent surgery within months, a reflection of his graded, hands-on approach to surgical teaching.
Service
In 2009, Dr Ranjan founded The Asoka Foundation, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to making quality eye care accessible to those who cannot afford it. The belief that no one should live blind for want of a simple surgery has shaped his career, from high-volume charitable surgery to the design of low-cost techniques like R-MSICS.
